Description

Hello Valued Community Partner,

May is Asian Pacific American Heritage Month.  Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders have a rich heritage of thousands of years old and have shaped the history of the United States, and had their lives dramatically influenced by moments in history.  We will celebrate the books and stories that reflect the tradition and rich diversity of Asian and Pacific Americans during May.

Become a Virtual Reading Angel today! Click the link, follow the instructions, and record your book reading from the comfort of your own home. We will share the videos with children across Delaware, encouraging them to read, write, and use their creativity with words. Before uploading your video, please register to become a United Way Volunteer.

Our goal is to feature book readings focused on Asian and Pacific Islanders throughout May.  If you could please record and submit your video during May, it would be greatly appreciated.  Videos will be highlighted on UWDE's social media platforms every Tuesday and Thursday at 11:00 am and 4 pm throughout April.

Encouraging children to read and write is critically important to prepare our children for academic excellence. Children who do not read proficiently by third grade are four times more likely to drop out of high school than those who read proficiently. Showing our students, by your example, the joy of reading will help motivate them to celebrate the power of words and create a community of readers. We hope you know how much our community appreciates you!

Below, please see some examples of suggested book titles, and feel free to read any book that is best for you.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to email me at klivingston@uwde.org.

Thank you,

Ken Livingston
