Why?

Children who do not read proficiently by third grade are four times more likely to drop out of high school than those who read proficiently. Please help us improve our kids' literacy scores and their reading capabilities.

Reading to children is one of the most important things you can do to prepare students with a foundation for academic excellence. At United Way of Delaware, our Reading Angels are making a difference. Like them, you too can experience the satisfaction, friendships, and joy volunteers discover at reading sessions. It is a grain of salt that you will contribute by reading to a classroom. Collectively, we can build a solid future for all Delawareans. All you need is the willingness to give a little of your time.

Commit to reading to students for 30 minutes. We'll help schedule a convenient date, time, and location – you will help inspire a love of reading in local children!

Young Men United, a United Way Worldwide/United Way of Delaware initiative that seeks to support and uplift young men of color throughout Delaware, is seeking adult mentors for the 2024-2025 school year. Mentors will work one-on-one with an 11th- or 12th-grade student from a High School in the Christina School District. 

Young Men United is focused on working with male students of color to improve their academic success, help them to be ready for career and college, and enhance their educational, health, economic, and leadership outcomes. This is a program that can change lives and help our young men become productive and responsible adults and citizens of our Delaware communities. 

Mentors must be available to meet with their assigned mentee once per week for the duration of the school year, tentatively starting the week of October 23rd, 2023, through July 2024th, 2023; meetings will be 30-45 minutes at the high school. All meetings will be in-person, although an occasional video call can be used if circumstances require it. The Young Men United point of contact will follow up with mentors on a regular to ensure mentoring sessions are proceeding in accordance with program guidelines. UWDE will provide training to mentors. 

This is an exciting opportunity to help shape the life of a high school student and prepare him for life after high school. We need our community leaders to step up and help bring up the next generation of community leaders for Delaware.

As I reflect on my 25 years of service with United Way of Delaware, I am deeply inspired by the power of community and the incredible impact we can create when we come together. Service has always been at the heart of everything I do because I believe it is one of the most meaningful ways to bring about lasting change.

Ballard's Reading Buddies is named in the memory of Corporal Stephen J. Ballard, a Delaware State Trooper, killed in the line of duty on April 26, 2017. 

Ballard's Reading Buddies is a component of UWDE Reading Angels which is a part of a larger grade level reading strategy that also is intended to impact school readiness, chronic absenteeism, and summer learning loss. Additional UWDE programmatic tools include home libraries for students (through UWDE's My Very Own Library Program), student library cards social emotional learning and unique family engagement opportunities.

There is also required volunteer training and the training location is based on the school you select. The Schools included are:

Southern Elementary School - Colonial School District (9:00am-10:30am)

Keene Elementary School - Christiana School District (9:00am-9:30am or 2:45pm-3:15pm)

Harlan Elementary School - Brandywine School District (9:00am-10:30am or 2:35pm-3:15pm)

The Delaware Racial Justice Collaborative includes more than 200 leaders (and counting) from grassroots, civic and nonprofit organizations from throughout Delaware. For administrative and fiduciary purposes, the group operates under the aegis of United Way of Delaware (UWDE), but is governed exclusively by its own members.
 
The Collaborative’s strategic objective is to drive transformative gains in racial equity and social justice across Delaware by eliminating those government, corporate, and social policies and practices that enable systemic racism and replacing them with those that achieve and sustain equitable opportunities and outcomes for all. 
 
To achieve this objective, the Collaborative will leverage and expand upon the work of its grassroots members by supporting community-based leaders across the state, especially young leaders, with the tools and resources necessary to achieve its objective. As well, the Collaborative will act as a unified platform to amplify the voices of those organizations representing people of color in Delaware and to advocate for immediate and long-term policies, practices and legislation that advance the changes in systems and culture needed.

Do you want to support students who have fallen behind because of pandemic learning losses? 

Teachers and educational professionals are needed to provide tutoring to K-8th grade students who are experiencing unfinished grade-level learning. Many kids, especially those who are disadvantaged, are facing a learning gap. We want to support students in accelerating their learning and getting back on track for a successful future.

Lasagna Love is a national movement, with thousands of people all cooking and delivering meals to families in their communities.

Our mission is not only to help address the incredible rise in food insecurity among families but also to provide a simple act of love and kindness during a time full of uncertainty and stress. You control the frequency with which you participate.

Volunteering with Delaware SCORE is a way for you to give back to your community, connect with area professionals with similar interests, expand your business awareness, and pass on your knowledge and expertise to entrepreneurs in our community.

Delaware SCORE volunteers provide confidential business mentoring services, both in-person and online, throughout the State. We lead seminars and workshops to help small business owners meet their goals and achieve success. We help expand outreach of SCORE through marketing and alliance building in our local communities. We provide subject matter expertise by industries and professional skills to educational institutions and other non-profit agencies. 

Volunteering as a Delaware SCORE mentor, workshop facilitator, or on the Delaware SCORE Leadership team  means you are joining a national organization of over 300 Chapters and 11,000 diverse volunteers. All of whom are all committed to helping small business owners succeed. Greeters:

You welcome, greet, and thank the donors and make sure they are looking well and not having an adverse reaction to donation (fainting or other) and call for help if something does happen. You help donors feel comfortable, cared for, and eager to return again. You serve donors prepackaged food options and cold, assorted drinks from the cooler. Donors need to have liquid and food intake after donation to stay well and healthy and remain in the area for 15 minutes for health and safety reasons. Your job is to ensure that this happens.

Qualifications: Positive attitude, compassion, interest in maintaining the health of others, customer service skills.

Time Commitment: Shifts are available 7 days a week, with varying shift times. The shifts vary by day and location.

Community volunteer groups are an essential part of providing meals for families staying at RMHDE. However, due to COVID-19 restrictions in place volunteer groups are not able to provide this valuable resource, but the need for meals is still ongoing.

At this time, we are planning to prepare meals for 50 guests each day.

Here’s how you can help:

Coordinate a catered meal to be delivered to our families. This is our highest-priority meal-related initiative. Meals must be prepared by a restaurant or facility with a commercial catering license.

Do you enjoy talking to people on the phone? Do you have natural customer service skills and compassion for others? We are looking for volunteers to make Circle of Care calls from home on Wednesdays or Thursdays.

Circle of Care calls are check-in phone calls that volunteers make to our patients and their caregivers. You will be calling and checking in to see if our patients have any needs such as medicine or supplies that must be addressed before each weekend by our hospice team. 

HCR ManorCare provides a range of services, including skilled nursing care, assisted living, post-acute medical and rehabilitation care, hospice care, home health care and rehabilitation therapy.

Community Heart & Soul is an approach designed to help small cities and towns succeed by identifying and strengthening those characteristics that matter most to the people who live there. Community members must be deeply involved in this effort, which lets them connect with each other and the places and customs they care about. Community Heart & Soul begins with a partnership between local government and residents in a process that casts a wide net of engagement that works to identify and articulate what matters most to residents.

Story Gathering Sub-Team:

The Story Gathering uses the Community Network Analysis and the Story Gathering strategy tools to ensure that all demographics are reached in story gathering. They also ensure that Story Gathering events are designed to adequately capture people’s stories and participant data, as well as to promote relationship-building and connections. Additionally, they participate in coordinating the process of gathering ideas for action related to the Heart & Soul Statements.

It is the goal of UrbanPromise to provide a mentor for every child and teen in our program during the school year.

Mentoring involves:

Remember: Mentoring not only helps the child you mentor, but it gives you a great experience. Volunteering as a mentor requires a commitment of time and energy, but it is a fun and enjoyable way to spend your time, with the added benefit of helping others.  

The Employment Support Network is a volunteer run program within Jewish Family Services to address the public health consequences of the unemployment crisis in Delaware due to COVID 19. Over 130,000 Delawareans have lost their jobs due to the pandemic and are suffering not only financial loss but also from the emotional stress that occurs when one must reorganize and restructure their life.

We are looking for caring volunteers to provide weekly virtual peer to peer support to the affected individuals seeking assistance. These volunteers, Wellness Team Leads, are tasked with supporting individuals’ mental health and overall emotional wellbeing in a variety of non-clinical ways: providing personal connection with the client, setting wellness goals, while also motivating them through stress relieving practices. 

The Wellness Team Lead is essential to the care planning process and will require the following skills:
