At United Way of Delaware, our Reading Angels are making a difference. Like them, you too can experience the satisfaction, friendships, and joy volunteers discover at reading sessions. It is a grain of salt that you will contribute by reading to a classroom. Collectively, we can build a solid future for all Delawareans. All you need is the willingness to give a little of your time.

How?

Commit to reading to students for 30 minutes. We'll help schedule a convenient date, time, and location – you will help inspire a love of reading in local children!

Volunteer: Young Men United Mentor

Young Men United, a United Way Worldwide/United Way of Delaware initiative that seeks to support and uplift young men of color throughout Delaware, is seeking adult mentors for the 2024-2025 school year. Mentors will work one-on-one with an 11th- or 12th-grade student from a High School in the Christina School District.

Young Men United is focused on working with male students of color to improve their academic success, help them to be ready for career and college, and enhance their educational, health, economic, and leadership outcomes. This is a program that can change lives and help our young men become productive and responsible adults and citizens of our Delaware communities.

Mentors must be available to meet with their assigned mentee once per week for the duration of the school year, tentatively starting the week of October 23rd, 2023, through July 2024th, 2023; meetings will be 30-45 minutes at the high school. All meetings will be in-person, although an occasional video call can be used if circumstances require it. The Young Men United point of contact will follow up with mentors on a regular to ensure mentoring sessions are proceeding in accordance with program guidelines. UWDE will provide training to mentors.

This is an exciting opportunity to help shape the life of a high school student and prepare him for life after high school. We need our community leaders to step up and help bring up the next generation of community leaders for Delaware.

If you have any questions about the mentor program or Young Men United, please reach out to Ken Livingston at klivingston@uwde.org.

Volunteer: Her Legacy, Our Impact--Pledge 25 Hours to Celebrate 25 Years of Service for Dr. Michelle Taylor

Pledge 25 hours of Service to celebrate 25 years of Impact

Friends-

As I reflect on my 25 years of service with United Way of Delaware, I am deeply inspired by the power of community and the incredible impact we can create when we come together. Service has always been at the heart of everything I do because I believe it is one of the most meaningful ways to bring about lasting change.

To celebrate this milestone, I’m inviting you to join me in making a difference by committing to 25 hours of service in 2025. Together, we can amplify the power of service and create a ripple effect that touches countless lives across Delaware.

Here’s how you can get involved:

1️⃣ Take the pledge by responding to this volunteer opportunity.
2️⃣ Once you commit, you’ll receive updates on meaningful service opportunities and simple ways to track your hours.
3️⃣ When you complete 25 hours of service by December 2025, you’ll receive a special commemorative gift as a thank-you for your dedication.

This is more than a celebration of my journey—it’s about continuing to move our mission forward and showing what’s possible when we act together. I hope you’ll join me in honoring the spirit of service and making 2025 a year of impact and connection.

Let’s keep building stronger communities, one hour of service at a time. Will you take the pledge today by responding here!

With gratitude,

The Delaware Racial Justice Collaborative includes more than 200 leaders (and counting) from grassroots, civic and nonprofit organizations from throughout Delaware. For administrative and fiduciary purposes, the group operates under the aegis of United Way of Delaware (UWDE), but is governed exclusively by its own members.

To achieve this objective, the Collaborative will leverage and expand upon the work of its grassroots members by supporting community-based leaders across the state, especially young leaders, with the tools and resources necessary to achieve its objective. As well, the Collaborative will act as a unified platform to amplify the voices of those organizations representing people of color in Delaware and to advocate for immediate and long-term policies, practices and legislation that advance the changes in systems and culture needed.

Volunteer: Food Bank of Delaware Volunteer

A Day in the Life of a Food Bank of Delaware Volunteer

Every day in the volunteer room is a little bit different than the day before. Volunteers could be asked to do a number of different activities. These activities are determined by the Volunteer Coordinator/Manager as well as the current and future needs of the Food Bank of Delaware. On a normal day in the volunteer room we could be making senior meal boxes, USDA boxes, helping out in the healthy pantry center, creating backpacks for our Backpack Program, sorting or boxing frozen foods (we will always tell you if we’re sorting freezer product so that you can come dressed and ready to be in the fridge!), creating donated meal boxes, or sorting through donations!

Before you get here, here are some short explanations of the majority of our daily volunteer activities! (Just to clarify, we do not do all of these every single day. Most volunteer shifts are 1 or 2 of these activities!)

Food Sorting: Volunteers sort food into different food categories, check expiration dates, discard damaged product or products otherwise unfit for human consumption and check recalled items. USDA Boxes: Volunteers will package USDA items in an assembly line. The Volunteer room is responsible for the creation and supply of USDA boxes. Healthy Pantry Center: Volunteers will help stock one of our newest additions to the Food Bank of Delaware, our Healthy Pantry Center! These volunteers will work with not only the Volunteer Coordinator but also with the Family Meal Coordinator. This includes stocking, working with pantry participants, pulling files for the next day, and whatever tasks the Family Meal Coordinator deems appropriate. Senior Meal Boxes: These boxes are designed and designated for the Seniors of the State of Delaware only. The boxes are lighter than the USDA boxes, making them much easier to handle. Volunteers will work in an assembly line to package these boxes. Donated Meal Boxes: We create boxes with all 10 of our donation sorting categories. Backpack Program: Volunteers are responsible for helping put together the bags we use for our Backpack Program. Similarly to our Senior Meal Boxes, the backpack program is designed and designated for students from lower income households. Volunteers will work in an assembly line to pack these bags. Frozen Sorting: On occasion the volunteer room will be used to sort frozen donated product in our open refrigerated area. This product is sorted into 8 different categories.

Volunteer: Volunteer in our ReStores

While corporate volunteer groups remain suspended due to COVID-19, we are currently seeking individuals who can commit to a minimum of 2 hours per week for at least one month – to volunteer in our ReStores. Our hope is to develop a core group of “regular” volunteers to assist in our ReStores located in Price’s Corner and Middletown.

Volunteers have been and will continue to be an integral part of Habitat achieving its mission here in New Castle County. Initially, all volunteer activities were suspended due to COVID-19. Since that time, we welcomed back some of our regular volunteers who offer 8 hours or more each month to Habitat NCC. We are also looking at how we can safely accommodate prospective homeowners on site, so they can achieve their sweat equity hours, and successfully complete our homeownership program.
